KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

Friday, April 5th
"Apa Caba"!  This is "how are you" in Malaysian.
This is the capital and largest city in Malaysia with a population of 1.6 million but the entire metro area has over 7 million.  The country has a population of over 30 million of which 55% are Muslim.    In the past Malaysia was known as a major exporter of tin and rubber but tin is no longer mined that much.  In addition nowadays, it manufactures electronics components, produces crude oil, is financial and insurance center, produces a lot of palm oil (which has a myriad of uses), and has a good tourism industry.
Last night we sailing through a big storm with lots of lightning and wind.  Strange, but did not hear any thunder.  There is a lot of boat traffic here in the Strait of Malacca between Indonesia and Malaysia.  We are not arriving in Kuala Lumpur until 10am and all tours not departing ship until 12:30.  Not sure why they aren't leaving sooner.  We will be taking a tour today.  When we stopped here back in 2010 we did not do any tour so have to see it this time.
Back from the tour and getting ready for dinner now.  We were delayed getting ready as there was a Malaysian culture show for Regent's best customers in the show room at 6pm, just after we got back from out tour.  So it's 7pm now and I am downloading photos while Rebecca finishes getting ready.
I was amazed with Kuala Lumpur today.  Construction is going on like gangbusters.  There are huge industrial buildings everywhere.  Sam, our guide, says Japanese car manufacturers have several assembly plants here for cars, trucks and buses.  Unemployment is only 4%.  I can tell how good the economy is by the number of cars on the roads.  Not many motor bikes as in the other Southeast Asia countries!  Now I know why my investment brokerage company has us with some investments in Malaysia.  This was a wonderful day here in the Malaysian capital.  I was very impressed with this country.  Not sure about the Muslim influence however!
This is an American owned pier and is used by the US Navy for all its ships coming through.
                                                     Our tour for today

Lots of modern houses that are government built then sold to the people for reasonable rates.
The Blue Mosque.  Photo taken from couple miles away so much larger than it seems.

                                                                    Brewery
                                                          Modern apartments everywhere
                                                      Modern office buildings also.

                                                          Buddhist temple

                                                       Indian part of town

                                                            Hindu Temple

                                                            Lush vegetation

National Monument--Monument designed by an American to commemorate the countries who fought here against the Japanese during WWII.
                                                         Crest of Malaysia
Click to enlarge and hopefully you can read what it says.

I overheard a gentleman on our bus say that the flag on the monument was the American flag.  Wrong, it was the Malaysian flag.  Red and white stripes are same but top left is very Muslim.
                                                          Independence Square

                                                           Sam, our guide
                                                       In distance is twin towers
In background is the new King's Palace.
Just a year old and larger than the White House.  Cost to build- $1.7 million US dollars
                                                             King's Palace

In background is the Kuala Lumpur communications tower

Gates to Palace guarded by King's guard with machine guns.
When we reboarded the ship there was an exclusive Malaysian cultural dance show for Regent passengers who have sailed many days with Regent.

SINGAPORE

Thursday, April 4th           87 degrees and 51% humidity--partly sunny today
Arrived in Singapore this morning.  About 4am I we started smelling a odor like exhaust fumes coming in our air conditioning.  Lasted until we docked at 8am.  Found out later it  must have been from other ships close by.  YUK!  Room service had a hard time getting our breakfast order straight today.  Brought wrong cereal twice!  We were not in a rush so not a problem.  After working out and showering we went off the ship right into a HUGE mall.  I found a Seiko watch that I have been looking to buy as crystal on my current one is super glued on.  Don't laugh, it worked!  New watch was even on sale.  Mall was so big we got lost in it when trying to return to the ship.  All the US stores have shops in this mall.
Cruise terminal with attached mall that extends to yellow cranes on right.
                                                                  Fueling ship--it took all day
                                                   Getting some supplies today

                                                         Cable cars over the city
Ok, after lunch we had a 1:45 meeting time for our "Iconic Singapore" tour.  There was 9 buses doing this tour (Regent does not fill the buses to avoid being crowded).  We have to go through immigration then a security check in the cruise terminal when getting on AND when getting back on.  So with about 250 people getting off it took a while.  It was also pouring down rain when we got off.  I got to thinking about all the hassle to get back on the ship at 6:30 after the tour and decided not to go.  We were here 3 years ago so, been there done that, already.  The tour was to visit a temple & mosque (I have seen way too many of them already).  It was also to go to Raffles Hotel where the Singapore Sling, mixed drink, originated.  We saw the hotel already and I did not need a "Sling".  So our friends, Allison & Joe, are on the tour and we headed back on board.  I had my usual afternoon cappuccino and back on the internet writing this.
Tomorrow we will be sailing in the Strait of Malacca between Indonesia and Malaysia.  Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is our next stop.  Two temples and a mosque on tomorrow afternoon's tour.  So excited!
Our veal Parmesan dinner last night was excellent but service extremely slow again.  Guess I will have to say something.  We were seated just after 7pm and left at 9pm without dessert.  Wanted to get to the showroom little after 9pm to get a front row seat.  Production show was "Broadway Tonight" with Jean Ann Ryan singers and dancers.  We saw the same show last segment and will keep going back every segment as it is wonderful.
Going up to Sette Mari for big ole veal chop tonight for dinner.

CRUISING SOUTH CHINA SEA OFF MALAYSIA

Wednesday, April 3rd
We are cruising off the east coast of Malaysia today heading for Singapore where we will be docking at 8am tomorrow.  I thought I would give you a little information about our next destination while I have time this afternoon.  First I should say that at noon it was 90 degrees, 50% humidity, partly sunny, and smooth sailing.
The Republic of Singapore is a Southeast Asia island city-state off the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula just 85 miles north of the equator.  The island country is made up of 63 islands.  It became a British territory in 1824, was occupied by the Japanese during WWII, then became an independent country in 1965.  Today Singapore is the world's 4th leading financial centers and its port is one of the 5 busiest in the world.  The people here are well-to-do as the country has the 3rd highest per capita income in the world so will be a big contrast from the countries we have visited so far.  One of every 6 are millionaires.  The population of the country is 5.3 million of which 63% are citizens and the rest are permanent residents or foreign workers.  Buddhism is the predominant religion.
An off shore drilling platform being towed
Beautiful deep blue ocean today.  Water so calm it is mirror like.
It is really quite pleasant out on our balcony.  When I went out to take the above two photos I met our new neighbors, Hollis & Patsy from San Antonio.  He was reading a book by Glen Beck so can't be all bad.  They are very nice folks.  I may go back out and do some reading too.
So what's on our social calendar for this evening??  Glad you asked!  Tonight is the Captain's Welcome Aboard party at 6pm for the 575 new passengers who joined us in Bangkok.  I was not planning on going but we saw Goren, our Food & Bev manager friend, at noon and he wanted us to come.  It is formal optional night.  We are to meet Martin, a friend we met on our 2010 world cruise, for dinner.  He is quite a character and lives in Las Vegas.  This morning we got an invitation to dine with the Cruise Director tonight but had to decline as had plans already.  I have ordered veal Parmesan for the three of us tonight.  After dinner we will go to the production show with Martin.  He also likes to sit on the front row.  The Jean Ann Ryan singers and dancers here on board are really very good.
