Tuesday, April 23rd
Sorry for the quality of many photos as they were taken through bus window. We had a great day here in Doha. Temperature was not bad today and there was a nice breeze. Very clean city and I loved the interesting, modern architecture. We are now sailing for Abu Dhabi.
Playing Arab music as we left ship
Museum of Islamic Art
New part of Doha across the bay.
Name of the Arab boats is "Dhow".
Official palace of the Emir
Arriving at the Souq (market)
These guys would use wheel barrows to take goods in and out of market.
Hundreds of shops selling just about everything including swords.
Police of horseback Think it was mostly for tourists.
Our tour guide
Can't remember what this was and lost my notes.
Traffic police but not much traffic. The Souq is busiest in evenings when locals do there shopping. Cooler then.
Tower buildings, mostly business offices, in the new part of Doha.
Interesting architecture. Following are some examples of it.
Homes of professional expatriates living in Qatar
Beach at Cultural Village. Locals cannot go to public beach. They can only use their pools at their home compounds. Only tourist and expatriates use the beaches.
Setting up shops or something at Cultural Center.
Amphitheatre that seats 5000.
Back side of the amphitheatre
Gold Mosque
Main entrance to amphitheatre
Mosque
Interesting as is home for pigeons. They go in the holes and there is food and water in it for them. Seems like a waste for flying rats!
Home compounds for the Qataris
These zig-zag buildings are for foreign professional workers. There is a big mall at bottom.
This is a new project development with 3 marinas and many high rise condos. Very up scale. Foreigners can invest here. If you buy a condo you are made a citizen of Qatar so do not need a visa.
This development built by American company with 800 architects. Condo sell to foreigners. 2500 sq ft sells for $750,000 and up. A home sells for twice that.
On opposite side of street behind me is a Rolls Royce dealership.
One of the marinas. The other two are not open to the public. A Four Seasons Hotel is being built now.
$750,000 and up for a condo.
Some very high end stores here. I did not have the nerve to price the shoes and hand bag.
Rolls Royce showroom
Interesting bath tub
One of many Islamic mosques
This is kind of housing the 20% live in. Guide never took us to where the 80% lived.
Drip irrigation keeps everything green
Largest mosque in Doha
Monument to clam divers
When we got back to the ship a ship from Australia was behind ours and was unloading sheep.
The aroma from this ship was quite intense and our Captain got permission to leave port early.
