TEL AVIV & JAFFA
Special note: We had dinner last night with Bev & Rich from near Boston. They had been on tour to Jerusalem yesterday and said that there were groups of 8 to 10 Israeli soldiers with full body armor and loaded weapons everywhere in the city. They said you could see them all over the place. Obviously there was some kind of threat and they were out in full force. Glad we were there the day before.
Port at Ashdod, Israel, about 25 miles south of Tel Aviv
You know the routine, our tour for today. We found Tel Aviv to be like any other big city and nothing real special. We were there on a Friday which Sabbath eve so no one was working. Lots of people though in the streets doing shopping and exercising.
We had bus ride through Tel Aviv to see sights.
Basically, it looked like any big city.
Boulevard with shops and restaurants running though Tel Aviv
The opera house
The 3 Israeli flags mark the spot where Prime Minister Itzhak Rabin was assassinated in Nov 1995.
He had just made a speech from second level pictured center.
He had just came done escalator to left of flags when an Israeli guy shot him close range 3 times.
Driving along sandy beaches of Tel Aviv
We are about to enter the old city of Jaffa. Ancient port city. Old due to when people settled here not that buildings are real old. Evidence shows the Jaffa was inhabited 7500BC. Number is not a misprint.
Clock tower entering Jaffa
Some meats roasting not sure what it is but know it is not pork.
Walking down narrow streets of Jaffa
Market area: selling rugs and lots of antiques
I bought a chocolate roll here. Delicious
Baking so pizza like things and breads.
Tells something about Jaffa. They are well known for their Jaffa oranges.
Our guide had planned on us crossing this bridge but.....
Zodiac signs
Rebecca by hers: cancer
St Peter's Church
This was place of gate to enter ancient Jaffa. The actual columns are in Israel museum. They cannot do more excavations in the ruins as may cause hill to slide into the sea.
Remains of the old wall.
Shops along the wharf
This is flea market in Jaffa
Note water tanks on roofs all have solar panels next to them. This is source for their hot water.
