RHODES, GREECE

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
Sunday, May 12th

Looking at the white buildings of Rhodes as we approach the Greek Island.
Rhodes is a Greek island with a population of 120,000 and half of them live here.  The rest live in 44 villages in rest of the island.  It is a very clean island and NO crime.  The local are very friendly.  It is a fantastic place and one we want to return to.
Holland America's Nordam was at dock next to us.  As we departed in the evening our Captain said on the PA, "We want to leave the port before the small apartment building does".

Some cannon balls from 15th century.
Today we are visiting the medieval city of Rhodes.  This is the outer wall of the "Palace of the Knights" or "Grand Masters Palace".  Built during the period of the Knights during the 14th and 15th centuries or period of the crusades.  The palace was pretty much destroyed in 1856 by a huge explosion but rebuilt by the Italians, namely Mussolini, prior to WWII.

Originally built during 14th century but rebuilt by the Fascist Italian Muscillini between 1932 and 1940.

                                                     Windows for guns

                                                             Coat of Arms

Our guide.  He had a very dry sense of humor and we all enjoyed him.

There was a fireplace in about every room.
Not an original but copy.
Mosaic in floors

In old days this street was lined with inns.

Entering a part of old city within the walls that is now a museum.

Back on the bus for trip up to Lindos but first we will have lunch along the way.

Beaches large ones and small ones all along the coast of Rhodes.
                                                                   Cemetary

Restaurant along the water where we had a wonderful family style Greek lunch.

.
Starting to look like rain.  In fact we did get rained on while driving on to Lindos after lunch

By time we got to Lindos it had stopped raining but looked like it could later.

Village of Lindos with the Acropolis on top of the hill.

You could pay to ride one of these flea ridden mules part way up the hill.  We walked thank you!
Small pebble stones make up part of sidewalk.
A really neat small, old church in Lindos.  No photos were allowed inside unfortunately as it was beautiful.

Walking up hill to see the ruins of the Acropolis of Lindos.
Looking down at Lindos.  History of Lindos dates back as far as the 9th century BC.

                                                       Rain in the distance
As sign below says the Acropolis of Lindos (the ruins you are about to view) was from 300BC onward.

                                                    Modern town of Lindos

What the Acropolis looked like over 2000 years ago.

Walking back down from Acropolis ruins through old streets of Lindos
