SORRENTO, ITALY

Friday, May 17th
Yesterday was an interesting day.  As I said we had to use tenders to go ashore on Sicily.  Our tour was just half day (luckily) and we got back on ship by 1pm.  At 3pm our Captain cancelled tender operations due to the swells that had been increasing as the day progressed.  There were 6 buses that did not get back on the ship as they were on all day tours.  The tenders were put back on our ship and we sailed up to Messina where there is a port and docking facilities.  So the buses were sent up to Messina and that is where we picked up those passengers.  It was nearly 4:30 before we got the tenders aboard and weighed anchor for Messina.  We arrived there at 6:45 and was again on our way to Sorrento, our next port, by 7:45.      .  Those passengers we left behind were't that upset as their bus ride was only 30 minutes and they had an hour and half to walk around streets in Messina while waiting for the ship to arrive.  Captain had no choice as safety is first.

Today we are in Sorrento, Italy.  Our tour, "Capri on the Lighter Side", began with a hydrofoil boat ride on 30 minutes over to the island of Capri.  Once again it was raining this morning.  Not real hard and ended shortly after arriving at the island.  By late morning the rain ended and the sun was out by afternoon.  Today's tour was not much of a tour.  It was more like walking around Anacapri, the upper town near top of small mountain, and shopping for two hours.  Then we rode small buses back down to Capri which was mid level of the mountain and walked around on our own for 3 hours.  We sat at a cafe/restaurant and shared a very good pizza and some red wine.  For me it was mostly a wasted day.  This was not a big place and we could have seen it in half the time.  Oh, well, I got some photos.
I got some shots of the sun sneaking through the clouds hiding the moutains above Sorrento as we approached.

Sorrento from the ship.  We dropped anchor again today and are using tenders as there is no dock here.

This bird was flying near our balcony and making a sound like a cat.  Very weird!
Just coming off our tender (orange top) and heading for hydrofoil pier.
This is our hydrofoil just arriving to get us.  It was a high speed boat and took us to the island of Capri in only 25 minutes.  They run on a schedule and both ways they were right on the time on our ticket for departing.

We just arrived at Capri's "Marina Grande".  From here we boarded small buses to take us to Anacapri, at the top of the mountain.
Some information about the island of Capri

Walking around Anacapri after visit to a very nice department store for a demonstration.  They were also making sandals for women and shoes for men.  They were hand made, very nice, and quite expensive.

Flower of the plant shown on previous photo.
Looking down at Marina Grande from Anacapri on top.

We took bus back down to Capri and this is clock Tower at the town square.

It was noon, as you can see, and the bells were ringing
Walking around Capri, enjoying some pizza for lunch, and doing some sight seeing.

                                                              Very unusual tree

It is about 5pm now and we will be sailing shortly for our next port which is Civitavecchia (port for Rome).  Tomorrow is the end of our 4th segment so once again most of the people will disembark and we will get new passengers for the segment--Rome to Southhampton, UK).  It is very beautiful looking our our balcony at the sun hitting the colorful town of Sorrento.
